King Soopers MarketPlace breaks ground at ReunionResidents of the Reunion development in Commerce City moved closer to having a large grocery store Tuesday with the groundbreaking of a 123,000-square-foot King Soopers MarketPlace, near 104th Avenue and Chambers Road.

Construction is expected to take a year, with an estimated store opening in the fall of 2012.

The store will anchor the 22-acre Reunion Marketplace Center, being developed by Shea Properties.

“Over the last 10 years, the growth in the northern range has helped double Commerce City’s population. More rooftops meant more expectations for services and stores,” said Mayor Paul Natale in a statement. “A grocery store has been a top priority for the city.”

King Soopers officials estimate 300 construction jobs will be created through Colorado contractor Mark Young Construction and their subcontractors. The store itself will employ 250 people.

“This is a great location for metro-Denver’s second MarketPlace concept and the partnership with the city was critical to our decision to locate here,” said Russ Dispense, president of King Soopers, in a statement.

Commerce City used results from a 2009 economic study that showed city residents spent an estimated $59 million annually in groceries outside of the city limits to attract King Soppers and Shea with nearly $2 million in rebates as incentive to build the store, according to city officials.

“It’s generally been said government doesn’t create jobs,” Natale said in a statement. “But government can and does create an environment that allows private enterprise to thrive. The city’s incentive program is one just one example of this.”
